Sephora has announced a significant achievement in its sustainability efforts, collecting more than 100,000 pounds of empty beauty packaging through its Beauty (Re)Purposed program.
The amount, equivalent to around 6,000 shopping carts filled with beauty empties, has been successfully diverted from landfills.
The Beauty (Re)Purposed program was launched in 2023 across all freestanding Sephora stores in North America, in partnership with Pact Collective. The initiative provides customers with a simple way to recycle beauty packaging, most of which is typically discarded because it is too small or made of mixed materials that curbside recycling programs do not accept.
Through the program, customers can drop off empty packaging from any beauty brand at participating Sephora locations.
The returned items are then sorted and transformed for reuse in products such as carpet, pallets, asphalt, new packaging, or energy recovery. This process supports Sephora’s broader goals of reducing waste and promoting circularity within the beauty industry.
The retailer also outlines three straightforward steps for consumers: clean the empty packaging at home, drop it off at any participating U.S. or Canadian Sephora store, and contribute to closing the loop on beauty waste.
The milestone underscores Sephora’s ongoing commitment to offering practical solutions that benefit both consumers and the environment.
The company says each empty product collected helps move the industry toward a more sustainable future.
