According to the UNICEF Malaysia Press Release on 2 April 2025, UNICEF Malaysia has launched an emergency fundraising campaign, targeting RM1 million to support relief efforts for children and families affected by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.
The appeal is part of a broader humanitarian response, with funds channeled towards life-saving services such as clean water, medical care, shelter, protection and psychosocial support. The campaign also opens the door for corporate donors and philanthropic contributions through bank transfers or online donations.
The earthquake which comes amid ongoing political instability and conflict in Myanmar has compounded an already fragile humanitarian situation. According to UNICEF, over 1,700 people have died, with more than 3,400 injured and hundreds still unaccounted for.
UNICEF teams are currently on the ground delivering pre-positioned emergency supplies including hygiene kits, medical packs and nutrition support, with health kits covering an estimated 1.4 million people. Aid delivery is taking place under extreme conditions with no electricity, clean water or proper sanitation.
The United Nations agency emphasized the growing need for sustained financial support to prevent further deterioration, particularly among Myanmar’s 6.5 million children who were already in need of humanitarian aid before the quake.
