U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a new tariff hike on Chinese imports, raising the rate to 125% with immediate effect. The move comes in response to what he described as China’s disregard for global market dynamics.

“Due to the lack of respect China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am raising the tariff on Chinese goods to 125%, effective immediately,” he said.

Trump also expressed hope that China would soon realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.

In the same statement, Trump also disclosed that over 75 countries had reached out to various U.S. government departments including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to negotiate matters concerning trade, tariffs, trade barriers, currency manipulation, and non-monetary trade practices.

The decision to implement a 90-day pause on additional tariffs offers a window for negotiators to potentially find common ground on global trade issues. However, with tensions still high between the U.S. and China, it remains unclear whether this period of reprieve will lead to meaningful agreements or further escalation of the trade war.
