Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s largest electricity utility, has announced its financial results for the first half of 2025 (1H 2025).
The results reaffirm TNB’s commitment to delivering reliable electricity, empowering communities, and rewarding shareholders. A key highlight is the RM1.5 billion dividend payout, which directly channels returns to millions of Malaysians through government-linked funds and institutions.
For the six months ended 30 June 2025, TNB recorded earnings of RM2.2 billion, supported by healthy electricity demand, operational efficiency and favourable foreign exchange gains. The appreciation of the ringgit from RM4.47/USD in December 2024 to RM4.21/USD in June 2025 contributed an additional RM350.6 million in translation gains.
This stable performance has enabled the Board of Directors to declare an interim dividend of 25 sen per share, amounting to RM1.5 billion in total payouts. Importantly, nearly 60% of these dividends will be distributed to government-linked investment funds, including:
- Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP/EPF)
- Khazanah Nasional Berhad
- Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB)
- Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (KWAP)
These institutions manage pensions and savings for millions of Malaysians, meaning TNB’s dividends flow back into the economy and directly benefit households nationwide.
TNB President and CEO Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan emphasised that rewarding shareholders also means giving back to the nation.
“Our dividend commitment reflects TNB’s ethos of delivering value while supporting the rakyat and nation-building,” he said.
While strong financials are essential, TNB stated that reliability of electricity supply is its core priority. In 1H 2025, the utility invested RM5.2 billion in projects designed to meet growing demand, strengthen energy security, and advance Malaysia’s energy transition.
These investments have already shown results. On 28 May 2025, Malaysia recorded a new peak electricity demand of 21,049MW, highlighting the country’s rising energy needs.
Despite this, reliability improved, with the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) reduced to 23.56 minutes per customer, compared to 23.92 minutes a year earlier.
Such improvements reinforce TNB’s role in powering economic growth, supporting industries, and ensuring Malaysians enjoy stable, secure electricity.
Nation-Building Through Education and Community Support
TNB’s contributions extend far beyond financial performance. The company continues to play a vital role in education, social welfare, and sustainability.
- Education & Talent Development: Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) will launch new AI-focused degree and master’s programmes in September 2025. These courses are designed to equip graduates with future-ready skills and support Malaysia’s digital economy ambitions. At the same time, RM64.3 million was provided through Yayasan Tenaga Nasional (YTN), benefiting 1,515 students across the country.
- Zakat and Welfare Assistance: TNB channelled RM5.4 million in zakat, reaching over 21,500 asnaf beneficiaries. Initiatives included home repairs, housing projects under Projek Baiti Jannati, and support for religious institutions and tahfiz schools.
- Broader Social Contributions: TNB allocated RM99.7 million in community initiatives. This included RM3 million in educational welfare for needy students, RM2.5 million in food aid and religious programmes for 93,000 recipients, and over RM335,000 in healthcare support benefiting 2,710 individuals.
- Disaster Relief: RM541,250 was disbursed to assist 3,156 individuals affected by floods, storms, and humanitarian needs such as aid for Palestinian refugees.
- Sports Development: More than RM4.8 million was invested in hockey development, benefiting nearly 15,750 athletes through training clinics, equipment, and grassroots programmes.
- Green Energy for Communities: TNB also invested in renewable energy projects, such as installing solar rooftops at schools and mosques in Pulau Redang, and rolling out solar-powered street lighting in rural communities and hospitals. These initiatives promote sustainability while directly benefiting hundreds of households.
