President of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam dissolved Parliament on Tuesday, 15 April 2025, to mark the official beginning of the next General Election, which will determine Singapore’s leadership for the coming term.

The Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong also advised that Nomination Day be set for Wednesday, 23 April 2025, a recommendation that the President has accepted. The Returning Officer has since announced that Polling Day will take place on Saturday, 3 May 2025.

This will be the first general election under Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s leadership, following his succession from former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The election is expected to serve as a significant moment for voters to reflect on the direction of the country under a new generation of leaders.

The official campaign period will begin immediately after Nomination Day on 23 April and continue until 1 May.

One of the key external issues that may shape the political discourse during the campaign is the renewed global economic uncertainty, particularly due to the reintroduction of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.

His renewed push for protectionist trade policies has led to fresh tariffs on Asian exports, raising concerns among Singaporean businesses over potential disruptions to supply chains and global trade flows.

With economic resilience and geopolitical shifts in focus, parties are expected to outline their visions and strategies for navigating these complex challenges in the years ahead.

The Elections Department is expected to release more details soon regarding polling stations, voter guidelines, and procedures for the upcoming election.
