A new direct flight route between Qingdao, China and Penang has been launched, improving travel access between the two destinations.
The inaugural flight, operated by Qingdao Airlines, arrived at Penang International Airport at 3.15 p.m. using an Airbus A320N with a capacity of 179 passengers. The service will run three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday .
Tourism Malaysia said the new route will support travel demand from China, which remains one of Malaysia’s key tourism markets.
The route is expected to facilitate leisure travel, business trips and visits among family and friends.
According to Tourism Malaysia Director General Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, the direct connection will make travel more convenient and help increase visitor arrivals in line with the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
Penang continues to strengthen its air connectivity with China. Airlines including China Southern Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, Spring Airlines, Juneyao Airlines and 9 Air currently operate routes connecting cities such as Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xiamen and Haikou.
Malaysia recorded 4.7 million visitor arrivals from China in 2025, a 25.1% increase compared to the previous year, reflecting strong demand for travel to the country.
Penang remains a popular destination for international visitors, known for its heritage sites, cultural diversity and food offerings.
Tourism Malaysia said it will continue working with airline partners to expand flight routes and support tourism growth.
