Malaysia has been elected to the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) for the 2026–2030 term during the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meeting held in New York on April 4.
Malaysia’s four-year term will officially begin at the 60th CPD Session in 2026 and conclude at the end of the 63rd Session in 2030.
The country’s election to the CPD shows the international community’s recognition of Malaysia’s active role in advancing the implementation of the Programme of Actions from the International Conference on Population and Development.
It also affirms Malaysia’s continued commitment in order to promote sustainable population policies that safeguard public health and well-being in line with the principles of inclusivity, equity and also human rights.
In line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Malaysia expressed its commitment to working closely with the United Nations and international partners in addressing population-related challenges through experience-sharing and capacity-building initiatives.
The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) plays a key role in supporting Malaysia’s participation in the CPD, particularly in driving policies related to gender equality, family planning, and social development.
The CPD is a subsidiary body of ECOSOC, comprising 47 elected members based on geographical distribution. It is tasked with providing advice to ECOSOC on matters related to population and development.
